The Gate

Diversion 3: Down the Rabbit Hole

Somehow, they found themselves led to the gate at the bottom of the hill.

They’d never been beyond it, but if they wanted to find the hare…

They steeled themselves, before squeezing under the wooden slats and starting up the hill. It was windy and covered with a fog so thick it was difficult to see the path ahead. Or the way back. They tried not to think of that.

After walking for a while, that familiar voice appeared in their mind.

It started counting.

Ignoring the wave of terror that gripped them, and the urge to turn and flee, they forced themselves forward. This must mean they were close!

Eventually, the counting stopped and voice spoke directly to them:

“Well, aren’t you a brave one! I must say I didn’t expect this!”

They kept walking.

The voice continued:

“They all thought they were brave too, until they saw me, that is. They were so scared I had no trouble picking them all off. One. By. One.

“But you. You’ll be different, I’m sure.

“I don’t know if you knew this about cats – well… OTHER cats, that is – But they all have a natural hunting instinct. Basically an impulse. So, if you think about it, were you even a cat at all?

“I jest. But honestly, you were missing out! The fun I’ve had! But they’ve all gone now, so I’m looking for a new playmate.

“And that’s the thing: cats don’t just go for birds. Or butterflies either. They’re capable of much GREATER targets.

“How have you found being a rabbit? I never liked it. No, being the hunter is much more fun. Though why tell you? I’m sure you’ll come to that conclusion yourself soon enough!”

The fog suddenly lifted, revealing a large, black shape sat on the path just ahead of them.

They froze, paralysed by the sight. They couldn’t even bring themselves to look at the creature’s face, staying focused on just the large black paws and swishing tail, which were horrifying enough.

Their brain raced for what to do, when the voice answered:

“Run”
